East-Orleans-Motorcycle-Accident
On Sunday, February 24th, a 49-year-old motorcyclist crashed in New Orleans East. The biker, unfortunately, lost his life in the accident.

Details About the Motorcycle Accident

The driver of a Suzuki motorcycle was traveling down Chef Menteur Highway at approximately 3:20 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, when, for unknown reasons, he failed to brake and crashed into the right rear of an SUV that was “taking off from the traffic light” on Dale Street.

This led to the motorcyclist veering off the roadway and striking an unoccupied vehicle.

Emergency personnel pronounced the motorcyclist dead at the scene of the accident. The driver and passenger within the SUV did not request medical treatment.

The accident is still under investigation and toxicology tests are being performed.

Motorcycle National Injury Facts

Spring is just a few weeks away, and motorcyclists have already begun to hit the open road once again. Of course, that means bikers and drivers of passenger vehicles will want to be extra careful as they travel about the state and in cities like New Orleans.

The risks associated with driving a motorcycle are very real and any individual who chooses to use this type of vehicle as their main mode of transportation needs to be very aware of the dangers. According to the National Safety Council:

  • Nearly 5,000 motorcycle riders and passengers died in crashes in 2016.
  • There were 88,000 nonfatal injuries nationally in 2016.
  • Motorcyclists accounted for 13% of all traffic fatalities in 2016.
  • In 2016, 26% of riders who died in a motorcycle crash were under the influence of alcohol.
  • 91% of riders who died in motorcycle accidents in 2016 were male.
  • Riders 50% and older made up 36% of all motorcycle fatalities in 2016.

It’s worth noting that not all motorcycle accidents are caused by the motorcyclists.
